Should I have quants in the spreadsheet, in the document or both?

One of the questions I’ve received is where to put and/or do quants.

Should I do all quants in the spreadsheet?

The answer is not necessarily. If you’ve got quick calculations that won’t take more than a few lines, feel free to do them in your document file where it’s easy for a marker to follow such things. You need not do all your quants in the spreadsheet.

Should I redo some of my quant in the document when I have it on a spreadsheet?

No, avoid duplication to the extent possible. You should be referencing an appendix rather than rewriting a lot of quant information.

For example, if you’re doing a Rent vs. Buy decision and you’ve concluded, based on the numbers that you should Rent.

In your response you would write something like: “Based on the analysis in Appendix 3, XYZ Corp. should rent the machinery. Therefore these are the implications.”

No need to repeat numbers here if you’re analysis is complete in the quant.

When you refer to Appendix, the markers will go into them and review and credit you there. No need to duplicate something which could cost you valuable time.

A reminder about Quants

Just a reminder, that markers cannot see your formulas so make sure your documentation alongside is clear and reasonably easy to follow. And of course, don’t forget to label your quants and give them a purpose and conclusion!

Any other quant tips out there?
